Monthly Drill Information

Each month during the official fire season (typically October to March), CFU 26 conducts a series of simple drills to provide Members and residents with basic skills to operate the equipment provided by the ESA and ACT Fire and Rescue.

Everyone is welcome to come along, whether just observing or having a go.

Format

The drill format and activity varies between drills, typically:

  • Early Season checks of equipment in the trailer, the booster pump, stand pipes, hoses and branches. Hydrant checks in our CFU area to ensure good access and operation
  • Mid season typically variations of: stand pipe, pump and hose coverage in the operating area; radio operation over distance
  • Late season weather conditional depending on the temperature
  • First timers can come and learn the basics at any drill: usage of the stand pipe, hose connection and branch (outlet)

    Safety

We always recommend and practice appropriate safety best practices

  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment where available: clothing, boots, gloves, helmet, goggles
  • Working in pairs - the buddy system
  • Use of traffic control measures and warning signs
  • Sign in/out procedure at the start and conclusion of each drill session

    Socialising

An essential part of the drill evening is the time after the drill exercise where all neighbours are invited to come along, bring a drink or two and meet up. It's a great way to get to know everyone in a relaxed setting
